THE TRUTH ABOUT ESSENTIAL OILS IN CLEANING

They're not just there to smell pretty

People assume essential oils in cleaning products are just for scent. A bit of lemon to make the kitchen smell fresh. A bit of orange to feel “natural”. A bit of peppermint to pretend the house is clean. Cute idea — but completely wrong. Essential oils aren’t perfume. They’re concentrated plant compounds with real, measurable cleaning power. And when you use the right ones, in the right ratios, they outperform half the synthetic “eco” fragrances pretending to do something.

Why I Use Essential Oils (and Not Fragrance Oils) Fragrance oils smell nice. That’s it. They don’t clean. They don’t cut grease. They don’t break down grime. They don’t inhibit mould. They don’t freshen surfaces. They’re just scented chemicals. Essential oils, on the other hand, bring actual function: citrus oils dissolve grease, rosemary disrupts odours, clove inhibits mould, lemongrass has antimicrobial activity, peppermint cuts through stale smells, cedarwood helps with deodorising. They’re not decoration — they’re part of the cleaning system.

Blood Orange: The Anchor of Every Eco‑Ness Cleaning Product

Blood Orange isn’t just my signature scent — it’s the backbone of my cleaning formulas. It’s rich in limonene, a natural solvent that breaks down grease, sticky residues, soap scum, and grime. It boosts cleaning performance without adding harsh chemicals. It’s warm, fresh, and functional. It’s in every Eco‑Ness cleaning product for a reason.

The Functional Oils I Use (and Why They’re There)

Rosemary: brilliant for odour control and surface freshness. Contains camphor and pinene — compounds that help disrupt lingering smells and support cleaning. Lemon: high in limonene, great for cutting grease and brightening surfaces. It’s not just a “lemon smell” — it actually works. Clove Oil: my mould‑inhibiting powerhouse. Clove contains eugenol, which is known for its antifungal properties. That’s why it’s in my mould inhibitor — not for scent, but for function. Lemongrass: contains citral, known for antimicrobial activity. Fresh, sharp, and brilliant for bathrooms and floors. Cedarwood: earthy, grounding, and excellent for deodorising. Helps neutralise musty smells. Peppermint: crisp, cooling, and great for cutting through stale odours. Helps freshen surfaces naturally. Mandarin, Lime, Grapefruit: all citrus oils rich in limonene and other natural solvents. They help dissolve grime, lift grease, and leave surfaces genuinely clean — not just perfumed.

Every oil I use has a job. A purpose. A function. Nothing is added “just because it smells nice”.

Why This Matters When You’re Choosing a Cleaner

Most supermarket “eco” cleaners use synthetic fragrance blends. They smell like lemon, but they don’t do anything. They add no cleaning power. They add no functional benefit. They’re there for vibes only. Essential oils, when used properly, boost the formula. They support the surfactants. They help break down grime. They help with odours. They make the product work harder without adding harsh chemicals. That’s why Eco‑Ness uses them — not because they’re trendy, but because they’re effective.

But Aren’t Essential Oils Dangerous? Anything can be dangerous if you misuse it — including water. The difference is transparency and formulation. I don’t dump oils in for fun. I use them at safe, functional levels that support cleaning without overwhelming the skin or the senses. No mystery blends. No synthetic fillers. No “fragrance” loopholes. Just real plant compounds doing real work.

Why I Don’t Use “Nature‑Identical” or “Plant‑Based Fragrance” Because those terms mean nothing. “Plant‑based fragrance” can still be synthetic. “Nature‑identical” means “we made it in a lab but it smells like the real thing”. And “fragrance” on a label can legally hide hundreds of ingredients. Essential oils don’t hide. They’re single‑source, identifiable, and traceable. You know exactly what you’re getting — and why it’s there.

The Eco‑Ness Difference: I don’t use essential oils to make my products smell pretty. I use them because they work. They support the cleaning base. They boost performance. They add function, not fluff. And they let me create products that are genuinely plant‑based — not just “green‑looking”.

Final Thought: If a cleaner smells like lemon but doesn’t actually clean like lemon, it’s just perfume pretending to be natural. Essential oils aren’t decoration. They’re part of the cleaning team. And when you understand what they really do, you’ll never look at a “lemon‑fresh” supermarket spray the same way again.

Our Bottom Line ...

Eco‑Ness is not trying to be the cheapest.

Our Mission is to be the clearest, the cleanest, the most honest and transparent Artisan producer of cleaning solutions on the market.

Supermarket eco brands are built for volume, utilise ‘green’ or ‘nature’ washing, and often do not have a full ingredient list, which has to make you question… “What are they hiding?”

Eco‑Ness is built for integrity.
